Adam Koepke embodies the journey of resilience, service, and healing. A combat veteran of the United States Army, Adam’s experiences have not only shaped his character but also his mission. His time served in Iraq has granted him a profound understanding of PTSD and its impacts, driving his compassionate advocacy for veterans and their healing journeys.
Transitioning from military service, Adam has embraced the world of diving, achieving the rank of Master Diver with aspirations of becoming an instructor. His dedication to diving is more than a pursuit of personal achievement; it is a commitment to extend a helping hand to fellow veterans, community members, and the younger generation, teaching them resilience and coping mechanisms through the therapeutic power of the underwater realm.
Alongside his wife, who shares his passion for diving, Adam has discovered the significant benefits that diving offers in fostering well-being and recovery. Together, they have experienced the joy and healing it brings to diverse individuals, making every dive a step deeper into the therapeutic embrace of the sea and the hearts of those they guide.

Bret Stewart
Vice President, Member of Board of Directors, Founder
Bret Stewart is a distinguished figure in the world of diving, epitomizing expertise and enthusiasm as a foundational member and owner of Hero’s Diving for the Sea. His credentials as an SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer and Advanced Open Water Instructor speak volumes of his commitment and prowess in the diving field.
Bret embarked on his diving journey in 2006, exploring the tranquil waters of Idaho for sheer pleasure before advancing to more challenging endeavors. His remarkable skill set led him to join the Bonneville County Dive Team, propelling him to the rank of Master Diver. During his tenure with the Bonneville County Aquatic Rescue Team, Bret played a crucial role in many successful recovery operations and a pivotal rescue, underscoring his dedication to the safety and advancement of the diving community.
He holds a deep affection for several local diving spots, including the Firehole River, Twin Bridges in Chester, and the captivating Ririe night dives, particularly during the fall salmon spawn, which he regards as his most cherished diving experiences.
Bret’s diving adventures extend far beyond local sites, with international dives in Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the Cayman Islands leaving a profound impact on him. These global experiences have enriched his appreciation for the world beneath the waves.
Teaching open water SCUBA is where Bret’s passion truly shines. He excels in conveying his deep love for diving to novices, emphasizing clarity and precision in his teaching methods. This ensures that his students are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely enjoy their own diving explorations. With over 1,500 certified dives under his belt, Bret has established himself as a prolific and effective instructor.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bret’s journey also encompasses personal growth and healing. As a retired Deputy Sheriff who has faced the challenges of PTSD, he has found diving to be a therapeutic escape, offering a peaceful haven. Through sharing his passion for diving, Bret aims to support others dealing with PTSD and trauma, highlighting the therapeutic potential of diving.

Ashley Stewart
Treasurer, Member Board of Directors, Founder
Ashley Stewart is an integral part of the Heroes Diving for the Sea team, where she leverages her passion for diving to make a profound difference in the lives of others. As an owner of Idaho Dive Pirates, Assistant Instructor, and a dedicated Swim Instructor, Ashley has been transforming her deep connection with the water into avenues for healing and empowerment. Since obtaining her certification in 2008, she has immersed herself in the diving world, driven by a personal mission to share the therapeutic benefits of water with as many people as possible. Her enthusiasm for diving is matched only by her commitment to teaching, whether it’s guiding students through their SCUBA certifications or imparting essential swimming skills as a Red Cross swim instructor. Ashley’s belief in the transformative power of diving shines through in her tireless dedication to her students and the community.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ashley’s personal journey with diving has taken on a deeply meaningful dimension through her husband’s battle with PTSD. Witnessing the profound impact that diving has had on her husband’s journey towards healing and finding peace has only strengthened Ashley’s resolve to promote diving as more than just a recreational activity but as a vital outlet for mental health and well-being. This experience has further enriched her approach to instruction and mentorship at HDS, where she integrates lessons of resilience, mindfulness, and the therapeutic potential of diving. Ashley’s story is a testament to the healing power of the ocean and her vision for HDS as a sanctuary where individuals can find solace, strength, and a sense of community beneath the waves.

Eric Ivie

Eric Ivie stands as a luminary in the diving community, embodying the spirit of adventure and compassion as the esteemed owner and pioneering force behind Hero’s Diving for the Sea. His title as an Advanced Open Water Instructor is a mere glimpse into his deep-seated commitment to the diving world and his unwavering dedication to fostering a supportive environment for veterans, first responders, and youth.
Beginning his underwater journey in 2009, Eric quickly distinguished himself not just as a diver, but as a mentor and guardian of the deep. His experiences, spanning from the cold, mysterious waters of Alaska to the historic shipwrecks of the Dominican Republic, reflect a path dedicated to exploration, education, and empowerment.
Eric’s adeptness in diving and his leadership skills were further honed in Monterey, California, where he guided Bamboo Reef, transforming it into a cornerstone for diving enthusiasts to learn and thrive. His return to Idaho was marked by a partnership with Bret, together embarking on a mission to expand the reach and impact of Idaho Dive Pirates, turning it into a haven where personal challenges are met with courage and camaraderie beneath the waves.
With a heart particularly inclined towards the local charm of diving spots and the thrilling narratives that each dive holds, Eric’s favorite tales include riding a motorcycle down the river, a testament to his innovative spirit and love for unique underwater experiences.
Eric’s global diving adventures have not only enriched his expertise but have also deepened his resolve to use diving as a bridge to healing and personal growth. His approach to teaching, characterized by patience, insight, and an infectious enthusiasm, ensures that every diver emerges more knowledgeable, skilled, and confident.

Levi Shaffer
Secretary, Member of Board of Directors
Levi Shaffer’s life has been defined by service, hands-on learning, and a deep commitment to youth development. A former firefighter and hazmat technician, Levi has dedicated his career to protecting others, from working in juvenile corrections to mentoring young people through outdoor education programs. His passion for guiding and inspiring the next generation extends to his role as a long-time Scouter, where he instills leadership, resilience, and a love for the outdoors.
With a strong background in technology, Levi once worked for a major computer company, yet his roots remain firmly planted in the values of hard work and problem-solving—lessons learned growing up in a small town in central Idaho. His diverse expertise spans electronics, nonprofit leadership, and recreation management, with a specialized focus on therapeutic recreation—using outdoor activities to foster healing and growth.
Levi has played a pivotal role in one of the fastest-growing national nonprofits originating in Southern Idaho, now reaching four countries. He also serves as a board member for a local youth mountain biking team, helping young riders discover the freedom and healing nature provides through biking, camping, and camaraderie.
Now a middle school teacher, Levi shares his knowledge by teaching students the power of technology through robotics and the importance of outdoor skills in utilizing natural resources for recreation. His journey into diving began just a year ago, yet his dedication has propelled him to the ranks of Dive Master, Dive Guide, and Assistant Instructor in training—with a goal of becoming an Open Water Diving Instructor.
Levi’s work with Hero’s Diving for the Sea is a natural extension of his lifelong mission: to help others find peace, resilience, and purpose. By introducing veterans and first responders to the therapeutic world of scuba diving, he provides them with tools to navigate PTSD, fostering healing through the weightlessness and tranquility of the underwater world. Whether in the classroom, on the trail, or beneath the waves, Levi remains committed to empowering others, proving that adventure and education are pathways to growth and renewal.

Janae Shaffer
Member of Board of Directors
Janae Shaffer’s journey is one of dedication, passion, and service—both in and out of the water. A lifelong educator, Janae has been a school teacher since 2011, specializing in Family and Consumer Science. Her leadership extends beyond the classroom, having served as a Chapter President for over seven years, where she has worked closely with volunteers, donors, and community members to make a lasting impact.
Her connection to the water runs deep. Raised in a family that owns a hot spring, she has spent her life swimming, teaching lessons since the age of 16, and working as a certified lifeguard through high school and college. Her love for the water is more than a passion—it’s a way of life.
In early 2024, Janae embraced the world of scuba diving and quickly advanced through the ranks, becoming a Dive Master, Dive Guide, and Assistant Instructor in Training, with aspirations of earning her Open Water Instructor certification. Whether she’s in the classroom guiding middle schoolers or in the water assisting with scuba classes, Janae thrives on teaching, mentoring, and creating opportunities for others to experience the healing power of the ocean.
Growing up as the only girl among six brothers, Janae learned early on how to stand her ground while maintaining a heart full of kindness. She is known for her compassionate spirit, but she is equally unafraid to advocate for herself and those around her.
Janae has explored breathtaking dive sites, encountering bull sharks, eels, clownfish, and the mystical cenotes of Mexico. But her most meaningful experiences come from witnessing firsthand how scuba diving fosters resilience and healing. She has seen the profound impact it has had on her husband, helping him navigate PTSD, and is committed to sharing these transformative experiences with veterans and first responders.
Through her work in education, leadership, and diving, Janae continues to inspire, teach, and uplift those around her, proving that the water isn’t just a place to explore—it’s a place to heal.
Former Board Members

Kenn Condon is a founding member of Hero’s Diving for the Sea (HDS), bringing with him a wealth of experience and dedication to service and safety. As a retired Captain of the US Army, Kenn’s military background is both extensive and distinguished. His expertise is further highlighted by his certification by the National Rifle Association (NRA) as a pistol and rifle instructor, as well as a range safety officer, credentials that underscore his commitment to responsible and safe firearms handling and use.
During his time in the military, Kenn served as an instructor at two pivotal training courses: the Army Infantry Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNOC) and the Engineer Officer Basic Course (EOBC). These roles involved training the next generation of military leaders, a testament to Ken’s expertise, and his dedication to nurturing the skills and abilities of others.
In his post-military career, Kenn has focused on providing resources for local agencies, working closely with veterans, and offering training opportunities. His goal is to ensure that individuals associated with HDS are equipped to work in the safest and most efficient manner possible. Ken’s efforts are driven by a belief in the power of education and training to empower individuals and improve operations within community-focused initiatives.
